When she had finished speaking to her father, Bobbie was at a loss on what to do. She believed that she had made an enormous contribution to the case, but this was not enough. She wanted to be in on its conclusion. She had earned the right to do this. Even her father would see this... Or not.

Perhaps she was stretching credibility too far, but there was one other angle that could be of use. It was very much the last card that she would have wanted to play, but a story was a story. Hailing a cab, she gave an address for the one place she knew that reporters might not have considered going.

It was another expensive cab ride for Bobbie and gave her pause to consider whether or not she could actually afford her chosen career. She needed a raise, that was for sure. The thought of demanding it from that misogynistic bully, Thornton Kent, gave her some qualms. She needed to bring this story in for the paper. She needed another scoop that would trump what she had already achieved. Finding Renat the Russian was key.

The cab deposited her outside the Midtown North precinct where an old partner of her father worked. Bobbie was also aware that a certain detective Nolan worked there too. But he was more of an obstacle than anything else. She tried not to think of what “anything else” might mean in the context of the young detective.

One problem occurred to her as she entered the precinct. The captain at the precinct was a man she had only recently met and who was unlikely to view her with any favour. He had proved to be more of a hindrance than a help on a recent case, at new year and her father was a little suspicious of him.

The desk sergeant, a man named Moran, saluted Bobbie as she entered the building, ‘Hi Red what brings you here? The old man ain’t here if you’re after him.’

Bobbie waved him away and laughed, ‘Trying to avoid him actually.’

‘Hey, if he’s treatin’ you bad, you just tell your Uncle Seamus.’

‘He treats everyone bad,’ pointed out Bobbie. ‘Is Harry in?’

‘Sure is. You know the way.’

Bobbie grinned at Moran and went through some double doors. She jogged up the stairs, passing a patrolman who was going to ask her where she thought she was going, but then left her as she seemed in a rush. She was.

Bobbie burst into the detective’s office, causing several men to nearly spill their coffee. One of them was Sergeant Shane “Harry” Harrigan. Harrigan was on his feet in a moment and enveloped Bobbie in a bear hug, which had a few of the other men wondering if the way to a girl’s heart involved possession of a beer belly and a fondness for muffins.

‘Red, what the hell?’ exclaimed Harrigan. This was his way of asking a number of things which ranged from how are you to why are you here? He frequently used this opaque line of questioning with criminal suspects, often to great effect.
